Adeptus Mechanicus

Combat Patrol

Infantry Painting

Initial Setup

  1. Prime black (this improves the coverage of the silver paint)
  2. Airbrush all metal areas with Vallejo Metal Color Duraluminium
  3. Airbrush all cloth and any exposed skin with White Primer (A little overspray is fine, just make sure all cloth is white)

Brush work

These steps can be done in any order.

  1. Fix overspray with Duraluminium
  2. Paint pants with Black Legion Contrast Paint (May require 2 coats)
  3. Use Tamiya Black Panel liner on all metal areas. Cover the entire metal area with this, it will concentrate in the recessed anyway.
  4. Paint purity seals with Zandri Dust
  5. Paint Bases with Gore-Grunta Fur Contrast paint
  6. Spong Wyldwood Contrast Paint onto the white cloth to add some dirt and grime
  7. On larger models add some shadows to the armour with Panes Grey Ink

Oil Paints

Wait before starting the next step. White primer should be given 24 hours to cure.

  1. Mix Burnt Umber Oil Paint with Mineral Spirits. You should aim for a fairly thick consistency, similar to one of the regular acrylic paints we use.
  2. Cover all white cloth with this mixture. Let it dry for 10-20 minutes.
  3. Wipe off with cotton buds. Change the buds regularly and always move in a downwards direction. If too much color remains you can switch to a makeup sponge to remove more.
  4. Let dry for at least 2 hours.

Back to brush work.

  1. Paint the wax seals on the purity seals with Flesh Tearer Red Contrast Paint. If the oil paint isn't completely dry this will wick off the surface and may require 2 coats.
  2. Highlight purity seal papers with Zandri Dust and then with Ushabti Bone. Add text with black pen
  3. Paint any skin with Rakarth Flesh followed by Guilliman Flesh Contrast Paint. On characters you can mix in some plaguebearer flesh, followed by a highlight of Pallid Wych Flesh, and a wash of Reikland Fleshshade
  4. Paint lenses and anything you want glowing with white paint
  5. Spray glowing areas with Baal Red Contrast Paint
  6. Seal with Ultra Matte Varnish
  7. Liberally coat bases, feet, and bottoms of coats with various shades of rust colored pigments. Brush off any excess. (I just randomly mix the 3 rust ones I have. The darker ones work best)
  8. Lightly drybrush some areas of the base with Vallejo Gunmetal. Concentrate on the scrap metal and diamond plate.
  9. Spray base rims with Panes Grey Ink
  10. Paint glowing areas with Daler Rowney Fluorescent Red Ink
